A writing assignment about the student's understanding of another work. Like a poem, journal document or a research paper. A simple critique would not work but an in depth analises would. Reading and understanding of another persons work would propoly be better at teaching then a person writing their own work. But, of course the work being looked at must be by someone who knows what they are doing. A elemntary students "who am I" essay would be useless, but a profesinal writer's work would help. In reading over another person's work will let the student understand the content better then writing their own work especally if the student is not a good writer. Reading is easier then writing to understand "what does it say?" Analysis "how does it work?" will also be accomplished in reading another's work. Interpretation "what does it mean?" can be accomplished if the student truly works on the assignment. The only aspect that may be had to accomplish is integration or "how can I use it?" This aspect can be worked on easiest for like a journal article that applies to the student, or a research paper that applies to the modern world. If you start simple, or more literal and work from their to more complex mental work then the student will more likely grasp the concept and truly understand the literary work.
